200-year-old Austrian icon, celebrated by a rising star

200 years ago, Johann Strauss Jr. changed the music world forever.

As one of the first true hitmakers, he wrote music that became popular across all levels of society. His legacy remains vibrant to this day: the waltzes that once filled dance halls are just as beloved now. Strauss made classical music accessible without ever becoming crude.

Inspired by this musical pioneer, author and composer J.J. Gasia decided to write and record new waltzes in the spirit of Strauss Jr., but with a fresh twist. This album takes you on a journey through Vienna, 200 years ago: a day filled with grandeur and music in the heart of the Habsburg Empire. From a performance at the Hofburg to an enchanting masked ball celebrating the turn of the year – it’s an immersive and lively experience.

Recorded in Vienna with the Altwiener Philharmonie and conducted by J.J. Gasia himself, this album is a tribute to Strauss that he would undoubtedly have been proud of.

"J.J. Gasia has created something both grand and moving. The quality is unmatched as he takes us from slow waltzes to fast polkas, bringing Vienna's golden days to life. A stunning debut and a masterpiece to cherish."

Composing Music

About the Composer

J.J. Gasia began music lessons at the age of five, learning both music theory and piano—much to his great annoyance. However, over the years, his love for the stories told by grand compositions grew. In his early twenties, he moved to The Hague to work at the entertainment company of Henk van der Meyden, the discoverer of André Rieu and the producer who first brought Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev together on stage.

During this time, his passion for both music and storytelling fully blossomed. He contributed to major productions such as The Largest Swan Lake in the World and Porgy and Bess. During a visit to Vienna for a production, he fell head over heels in love with both Strauss and the city itself.

It took him more than six years to write, produce, and record the imaginative album Walzer in Wien. Its success gave his musical care a jumpstart and earned him a record deal for five original albums.

Exceptional, especially for a debut from a novice.
